The 100 Years War 1337 - 1453

1337 – King Edward III claimed the throne of France although, the French nobles gave the title to Philip of Valois – starting the Valois dynasty. England and France had commercial and dynastic rivalries and were vying for commercial area, known as Flanders. It was an ongoing dispute and they went to war in 1340.

France had more men, but England dominated the seas, and had the skilled longbow men, gaining the advantage over the French.

1346 – The English defeated the French at Crecy. They lost 15,000 men, and England only 200, this was a major victory for England.

1347 – England siezed Calais for a year

1347-54 Black Death halted the proceedings

1356 – The French King was captured at Poitiers, followed by successive raids by the Black Prince till 1358.

1358-80 Du Guesclin uses novel guerilla tactics, harrying the English troops and recapturing many fiefs.

1380-1413 A semi-truce prevailed. Demobilised soldiers rampage throughout France. Edward III dies.

Dauphin of France and Edward III 1312-1377

1413-28 Henry V conquers more parts of France. The armies met at the Battle of Agincourt 1415, where the English were once more victorious, until 1429 when Joan of Arc led the French troops to victory at Orleons. Henry V died. The French were reunited and inspired by the courage of Joan of Arc Maid of Orleons, who escorted the dauphin Charles VII, to Rheims to be crowned King of France. She was later burned at Rouen in 1431.

1444-53 The French King strengthens his army and expels the English from France. From 1453 onwards, there was post war disorder, and the two countries had developed an enmity which would endure for centuries.
